Film review
The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964)
★★★★★
I tried looking for the practical reasons each shot was done in this movie. To analyze it like a film. I think I approached this movie wrong and I'm glad I caught myself in the beginning so I didn't ruin the rest for myself.
Damien Chazelle explained that if he had to choose one movie to send to aliens he would send this one because this movie shows everything that a movie can be that normal life isn't. Once you suspend critical analysis, like I did, the movie starts to hit you. The movie is fantastic in its own merit, and it is done really technically well, but that's not what I'll remember or what I'll take away. I'll the remember the colors, the cinematography, the fact that it's all sung, and the hauntingly beautiful theme. The movie is perfect but not because it depicts reality. It's perfect because it depicts what reality tries to be. The way it portrays love, heartbreak ,longing, sadness, happiness, or any other emotion, and that it is all sung, is something which could only exist in the movies. This movie will remain with me for a long time
