Jurassic Park (1993)
★★★★★
Again, put this in the hands of any other director and it would have been a joke (we don’t have to use our imagination too much re: the Jurassic park sequels and reboots)
Spielberg does a few things in his movies consistently.
1) this movie has a misleading premise. It’s not about a dinosaur park gone wrong. It’s about a man who doesn’t want to be a father, the negligence in human ambition, and the value of human relationships over anything else. These ideas happen to be wrapped up on a dinosaur island
2) let the camera run. So many movies have quick cuts or try to engender a false sense of user engagement by manifesting an unwarranted, unnecessary fast pace. Spielberg let’s the camera run and let’s the movie breathe. Only in intense action sequences is there some semblance of that fast- paced style of filmmaking but even then he lets the camera run more often than not
3) the world is so well constructed. It feels like Spielberg made this movie as a blueprint for universal studios to open the theme park. It feels lived in and understandable within minutes
4) the music is just sooo good. It adds an emotional element to a movie that COULD have been all action oriented
Also Jeff goldblum just steals every scene
