E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)

★★★★★

Only Spielberg can take the premise of an alien having an extended stay on earth and produce one of the greatest movies ever made. Spielberg has stated before that he doesn’t think he has a style, and perhaps he doesn’t have a style per se, by there are definitely elements of other movies of his that I noticed in this one. The use of lighting and shadows is apparent to the extreme. Fog is used to draw attention to this to almost a comical degree; there’s fog inside the house! It’s all about the shot, and as long as this doesn’t steer the audience away fro mowing enveloped in the world of the film, which it didn’t, this is totally fine. Spielberg expertly left the adults out of the film for the entire opening. This is a film about a child’s journey and growth, and the searching adults or even biology teacher, are not an important part of that process. At least initially.
