Close (2022)

★★★★½

A beautiful, delicately handled, tender film. Incredibly heartbreaking and sad; I really felt heavy throughout the runtime. The director uses the cinematic language really well here - to show the characters inner world, to leave subtextual clues, and to invite the audience in. Nothing felt superfluous. I'm not sure what the style is called/what lenses or coloring is used but the naturalistic lighting in movies like this, or those of Joachim Trier is really striking and both a perfect way to establish the brightness of a youthful world and to contrast the heavier emotions later on.
A lot to digest but a super important film - the world is that much richer for it.
