Film review
Cléo from 5 to 7 (1962)
★★★★
I visited the Academy Museum in L.A. about a month ago and they had an Agnes Varda exhibit. There was a screen playing selected clips in a montage from her movies and the clip of Cleo singing slowly, sadly at the piano came on and I became transfixed. I waited 2 or 3 rotations of the montage to see the clip again and I was excited to see the movie finally.
That clip definitely was the most magical moment of the movie for me, even if that's due, in large part, to the brilliance of Michele Legrands compositions. I'm happy I saw the rest of the movie too but wow that clip just made me feel some kinda way.
The movie is an interesting meditation on fame and the "spotlight effect", paranoia, love and our need for it, and friendship. Varda's films are deep if you're willing to peel apart the movie as you're watching and recognize what she's doing with her filmmaking just as much as you're looking for the message in the script.
